For the chinchillas cage, you want to get as big as you can. They love room to run & bounce. (they must always be let out to play, no matter what the size of the cage is.) When you first get your chinchilla a smaller cage will help with bonding though. You can decide what route to take.
You must put their cage in a place where it will be out of the sun & away from a drafty area. Although make sure it isn’t too hot either! (heat stroke is easy for a chinchilla)
You should always have levels, sticks, or platforms for them to hop on. They need a hut of some sort to sleep in, a water bottle, hay rack, food dish, & OF COURSE chew toys! A wheel is always a nice touch too!
Be creative. Just make sure that its safe to chew & cannot cause a problem when eaten. (& of course free of all sharp edges!!)
I would put your cage somewhere where you are a lot. Then you can see them & they see you. This too will help with bonding!
It’s good to have plenty of choices for your chinchilla to hideout/play/sleep in. I have a ton of Hammocks, wood boxes, cardboard huts, other chinchilla safe housing, & other toys! I also have in the cages tubes, wheels, lots of chew toys, & many levels to jump around on.
Do not use cedar or newspaper for bedding. Cedar can cause eye/lung problems & newspaper is bad if eaten, not to mention it makes them smell a lot worse.
As always be creative about what you use in their cages, just be SURE to keep things SAFE!
