Chinchilla Breeding Info

  • Do you have the money to spend on all the caging, Vet care, & food/toy supply?
  • Do you have at least three cages; for the mom & kits, one for the daddy, & then one for the mom, one for the kits, & one for the daddy?
  • Do you have all the other needed housing supplies for all cages?
  • Do you know where you will be selling the offspring to, it can sometimes be VERY hard to find homes for little ones, even for a known breeder!
  • Do you realize that this is not one of those ‘get rich quick’ schemes?
  • Do you have an Exotic Vet. Lined up for your chinchillas, the kits, & for any other ER Vet. Care?
  • Have you done all the research on breeding your animals?
  • Do you have suitable breeding animals with full pedigree? (You should not breed an animal if you don't know it's family genetic backround!)
  • Have you done all the research on the health of your animals while breeding, during pregnancy, & kits/weaning?
  • Will you know if your female is having a birthing problem or if one of your kits is sick?

There are SO many things that one needs to think about before breeding their animals.

There are a lot of homeless animals in the world so we need to, ‘Find homes for those in need before we BREED!’

You also need to think about why you are wanting to breed? Is it to experience the miracle of birth? Or is it to make money? I can tell you now from experience that you will never get rich from selling chinchillas! You end up hardly breaking even. You must think about the amount of food/hay/supplement/etc they will eat, how much bedding they will use, the more there are the more you have to feed, clean, & play that will be needed. Breeding animals can take a lot of time from ones schedule.
