As for the ears, they don’t normally have much problem with them. Although they can get ear infections, from wind (if they are taken outside, fans, or by a window that’s open.)
This means, they cannot have a dust bath if this does occur. Dust bath is bad for any infection!! If you see your chinchilla having a problem with balance, scratching the ears, or fluid comes out you must see a Vet. Immediately! These signs would indicate internal infection, mites, ringwrom, & other inner ear problems. If the chinchilla seems to have problems with balance its also possible a siezure could have been the cause.
Red/warm ears also will indicate that the chinchilla has developed a fever & must see a Vet. (Don’t confuse this with being too hot after play time, from running in the wheel, or after being held. If the ears are REALLY red & the chinchilla seems overly hot take them to a cooler place to lay. If they dont seem to get any better get them to the Vet. ASAP! When a chinchilla gets too hot it will result in a heatstroke which more times than none, they do not recover from. Don’t question it, if you think they are in serious trouble please take them to the Vet. Heat stroke is Very deadly to a chilla!
