Noises

Gliders make a number of noises ranging in meaning.

Most likely the first noise you will hear will be the crabbing. This is a very loud weird almost unexplainable noise. Many people say its sounds like a giggle stick, a pencil sharpener, or a small chainsaw. This means, get back, I’m scared go away!

Another noise they make will be the chirping this one means they are content, excited, happy, (mine normally make that noise when I feed them mealies or a treat!)

The hissing noise is another you will hear often. It’s not like a cat hiss, but different, you will know it when you hear it. This means a number of things they are just talking to each other or you. This could also be made when constipated.(also made when one is trying to take food from another.)

The clicking noise is them just talking together, it’s very faint; & most people don’t even notice it.

Another is a high pitch shriek or shrill crabbing like noise, just a touch different. This is made while fighting or when a predator is near.

Lastly, is the one that will keep you up all night especially during certain moon phases. The Barking. Yes, they bark like a dog, only quite. This is just wanting attention from fellow gliders or their human companion who are trying to sleep!!!!This can also be a warning signal to other gliders that something is wrong, like weather, predators, or a warning if the joeys or someone else has escaped from the cage.

In captivity the sounds probably don’t meant exactly what they would in the wild, but we never know. Try to pay attention though when they do make noises. They may need your help... or trying to chat with you. The more you pay attention the their noises the more intune you will be with their feelings & communication!
