Obesity

Obesity is rather common among domesticated hedgehogs. It is really important that you feed high quality cat food that is not high in fat.(The lower the fat the better!) You also want to provide a number of other healthy snacks such as, crickets, worms, fruit(no citrus), veggies(no beans), & a mealie here & there(they are high in fat so watch it with them.)-- I would actually not give them if your hedge is over weight.. or at least until there is a good weight loss.

Another way to help reduce the risk of obesity in your hog is to make sure they have a wheel to run in when they feel they want to. Letting them have free run time will also help this a lot!!!

If you think your hedgie is obese, take it to the Vet. for further examination as well as helpful tips on what to change in their diet. A few signs of obesity are yellowing under the armpits & weighing over 700 grams. Letting this go is NOT good, it can cause fatty liver disease & it can become fatal.
