(Atelerix albiventris)- The most common of the captive hedgie population is that of the African-White bellied pygmy Hedgehog.
They are found in of course western Africa, southern Somalia, & Tanzania. They live among the dry Land across the African Savanna.
They tend to seek shelter in brush & very few trees. Hedgies have also been known to liven among everyday life.. like humans in gardens & parks.
Hedgehogs look all different ways depending on what type of hedgie you are looking at.
There are European, Desert, long-eared & of course the African pygmy. All of them rang in colors, size & live differently throughout the world.
African Pygmy hogs look rather cute & i think they are one of the cuter of the hogs. They range in weight from about 500-800 grams & can be about 15 inches or more in length. They have a stubby tail, cute little ears(kinda like a ferrets),they also have 5 toes on their front feet & 4 on the back.
The quills of a hedgie are sharp like a needle, about an inch long & they must be handled with care, not only for your safety, but also theirs.
The African pygmy hog has soft fur covering its face, belly, & legs.. the fur is generally White, but due to genetic mutations there are not several different colors.. the most common colors are grays, tans, browns, blacks, whites, & anything in between. They are all amazingly beautiful & its not hard to understand why so many people have the latest 'hedgie craze.'
