Play Time

Your hedgie needs a time out of its cage to explore & just to get a new feeling rather than being cooped up in the same old cage daily.

I let my hogs out for about an hour to an hour & a half a night, some nights they don't explore much & fall asleep under my stuffed animal pile.It just depends on their mood i guess.  I try to get them out for a jog at night & also turing off the lights to helps to keep them awake when they are exploring.

Breaking up their free time in to half hours also works well. That way you can let them back in the cage for a drink, food, & or just to catch a few zzz's before the next run.

Mine seem to use their time wisely if i break up their play time instead of giving them one long outing.

When you let your hog out to play make sure there is nothing for them to get caught up in because they like to burrow & that can cause them harm with many household things. They could also get stuck in vents & such, so please go over your room you are going to be using for their free time VERY carefully.  You also need to look out for toxic things they could come in contact with, as well as choking hazards.

Another good idea is to buy a ferret play pen, these will keep the hedgies in one area of a room & then the whole room doesn't have to be proofed. This is a very safe way of letting them out to play.

When they are out be sure to give them plenty of toys like cat toys(without cat nip), ferret toys, wheels, boxes, & anything safe you think they may want to explore. Be creative with what you use for them, they will thank you for a wide variety of stimulation. (& in return they will be a lot happier & mentally healthier.)
