Preparing

When preparing to breed your hedgie it's very important that you know the background of your animals, like color, age, parents & who the breeder was.
You also want to make sure you have two healthy, tame, & happy hogs before you breed.. no reason in producing something that is going to be sickly or mean. Breed to better the animal, not to just breed.

You will also need to take into consideration of what you are going to do with the young once they can be weaned. You CANNOT keep opposite sexed family members together, bringing you to another MUST when you get into breeding.- Your set ups, not just any set ups, but baby proof cages so you dont loose any.
You will need four cages...one for your mommy hog, one for the daddy when mommy cannot be bred & or has the hoglets, another for the male hoglets when weanable & lastly another cage for the female hoglets when weanable. When you have more cages, that means you need more supplies, like water bottles, food dishes, ect. Where there are more hogs, there will be more time that needs to be spent with them, more food they will eat, the more bedding that will need to be used, & that much more money you will be putting into them.

Selling hedghogs is actually a rather hard task for the simple fact that not many people want to own a pet that will hurt them without even trying. They are not the typical lovey dovey pet, it takes special people to understand them & want to care for them. It takes a lot of work to sell your hogs to people who will actually care for them & keep them for the rest of their lives.. many people find it a mistake soon after getting the hog home. Many responsible choices are needed to be made on your part to place them in good forever homes.

Before you start your breeding program you will also need A LOT of studying done to be able to care for neglected hogs, how to prevent your mother hog from cannibalizing her young & much, much more. Breeding is NOT just putting two animals together, it takes a lot of work, patience, & money!

There are many, many things i will suggest that you think about & go over before putting the stress of breeding onto your hog.. if their diets arent right they can become malnourished & die, please take breeding seriously.

Please think about what it really takes to bring new life into the world through breeding your animals. Good luck & breed responsibly!
