Temperament & Taming

The temperament of your hedgie will probly be different from everyone else's & just may switch day to day.
Hegies are relatively grumpy animals, but not so much in a negative way. Their defense mechanism is sooooo great that it just makes them seem mean. You have to see things from their point of view though.. if you were that little & couldn't run fast & wasn't really hat freaky, wouldn't you be scared of you? lol
Hogs generally snuffle at you & kind of hiss. Most will curl into a ball, or a partial ball when scared, their quills tend to stand on end & then they hop to poke at their predators.
As long as you understand hedgehogs you shouldn't have a problem & most NEVER bite. You just have to remember to move slowly, quietly, & give it time.

For taming your hog it is best to wear a shirt or bandanna for a few nights or weeks to get it nice & smelly. (night time is best for this because them your actual scent will get on it & not everyday smells, & or perfumes etc etc.) Hedgies go a bit by scent as a glider & its best for your bonding process if your hog knows your smell.

After you repeat this for a month or so they should start to realize who you are & that you mean no harm. Handle your hedgie often to show them every time they return unharmed & actually have a good time with you.(good way to show a good time is to let them crawl all over you, feed treats they love, let them out to play, & moving slowly to them when trying to get them out.) When you first get them out they will almost always be in a ball.. just wait a few minutes & let them uncurl for you, after they do this sit with them a bit then let them down to play.
after doing this for a few months, it will be like pie & your hog will start to love you VERY much! As i have said out all the animals i own, time is the key to a good happy relationship with your pet.
It's all about trust & what better way to show that than giving it time.. on THEIR time!
good luck & happy bonding!
