If you ever notice that your chinchilla has bad breath, is slobbering, has stopped eating, or has a lot of eye problems, there could be something wrong with its teeth. Make sure you are providing a block of wood for your pet to chew on or a pumice rock. Chinchillas need to chew in which to file down their teeth regularly. Their teeth are not like our human teeth. They are always growing, much like our hair & finger nails.
If the incisor teeth get too long that your chinchilla has stopped eating altogether, you will need to get to the vet so they can cut them down. Good prevention of this is to make sure they have enough calcium, plenty to chew, & good source of vitamins.
In some extreme cases a chinchilla will need to have its teeth trimmed monthly, be hand fed, or worst case, put to sleep.
A chinchilla with teeth issues should NEVER be bred, it can send on the gene to its young creating bad, unhealthy offspring.
