Mouth

The mouth can have a lot of problems to watch for. A lot of times chinchillas will get problems with their teeth!

Teeth should be yellow in color & should not over hang the lower teeth. You have to make sure they have chew blocks at ALL times! Pumic is also GREAT for the teeth. Dont allow them to chew plastic & fabric; only allow pet approved products.

Watery eyes can sometime be a sign of tooth problems. Other signs might be if the chinchilla will not take treats, eat their regular diet, they start.drooling, pawing at their mouth, or fast weigh loss. Any or a mixture of these signs get your chinchilla to the Vet ASAP!!!!

I weigh my chinchillas two times a week with a postage scale, this seems to help a lot to know if someone is ill.

Weighing your chinchillas is a good idea, so you can make sure they are maintaining a good healthy weight! Weight loss can indicate illness, disease, or depression, weight gain will indicate a possible pregnancy, obesity, or healthy eating habbits. If you question your chinchillas weight, its a good idea to question your Vet. or breeder.

Giving tums to a chinchilla without yellow teeth with help with their calcium resulting in the teeth to yellow.

You can also watch for chipped teeth & or other other tooth decay.
