While preparing to get another addition, you need to think of a few things. You need to get four cages, one for the one you already have, one for the new one you will be getting, if breeding, then one for the female kits, one for the male kits.(remember the mother cage & kit cages MUST be KIT proof!) You will need the new cages & other supplies for multiple reasons. What if the two you want to breed don’t get along right away? What if one gets sick & you have to keep them apart?
After the female has the kits you will need to remove the daddy chinchilla from the cage, so you don’t have a breed back. (That is way to stressful on the mother chinchilla.) Then you must wait a few months to put them back together after the kits are weaned. *You cannot keep the daddy with a daughter, the mother with the son, or differnet sexed siblings together when it they are 8 weeks or older.*
If you decide to get out of breeding would be another good reason to just have more than one cage & supplies!
Before getting ready to breed you must do a lot of studying. What chinchilla color cannot be bred together due to the lethal factor. You have to find out proper feeding, handling, how to manage the kits, & the birth. (It's NOT as easy as putting two together to have healthy kits & parents.) You also should NOT breed pet store animals as you have no idea about their genetic background. You want nice high quality breeders to improve the species breed, not just have fun with nature.
It's a great experience to go through at least once, but why not better the breed while learning & having fun?
You also need to feed extras to the female. Tums & other vitamin supplements are best at this time as well as plenty of fresh hay, pellets, & water! Researching NEVER ends, its an ongoing process that I'm even still doing.
The female should be in a quiet environment throughout this whole time as well. The kits need to be handled often in order to be tame. You might want to ask yourself a few of these things : Where are you going to sell your animals? Is it legal? Are you breeding because you think there will be money involved? (hope not seeing you spend A LOT of money on the animals you are breeding for supplies, beddings, toys, foods, etc. Can you provide this? What happens if you cannot sell the animals, what happens if you need immediate Vet care that can range in prices of $20 to $3000.
Please think about what it means to breed, its not just fun & neat for you. These sare living things that are also involved! (meaning in some cases their lives could be on the line.)
*PLEASE BE PREPARED!!!!!!!!!*
