An Ounce of Prevention - * preventions is key!*

One of the first things you will want to do is find a veterinarian that knows how to deal with chinchillas; the more experienced, the better. A good place to keep the number would be with your chinchillas things & or where you keep important numbers. Prevention includes a number of steps so your animal can live a happy, healthy, long life!.
This includes:

  • Making sure the cage is clean (like the bedding, cage bars, dishes, water bottles, & other toys/bedding.)

  • Providing a familiar environment, by avoiding switching the caging around & re-locating the cage.

  • Avoiding treats high in fat, sugar, starch, salt and oil. Give other treats in small quantity. (such as raisins, grain bases cereals.) Do not Change food & hay often.

  • Give plenty of fresh hay, pellets, & alfalfa blocks for roughage.

  • Give fresh Water daily, & sterilize bottle often!

  • Make sure stool is dark, hard, smooth, and opaque. (not too dry or small, & not too soft or discolored.)

There are times that our pets become ill, regardless of all the precautions we have taken. If your chinchilla ever shows signs of weight loss, loss of appetite, loose stools, or restlessness, fur chewing, & or something else not like them, you must contact your vet right away. You know your chinchilla best, so always make sure to watch for any signs that may indicate illness or problems with their health.
